Behind two 100
yard rushers and a defense that limited Jackson South Side to only 167 total
yards for the game, Lipscomb advanced to the second round of the Class 4A
playoffs with a solid 28-8 victory.
It took the
Mustangs only five plays to score on its first offensive possession moving 62
total yards to take an early lead.
Scott Bledsoe’s first of three touchdowns put Lipscomb on the scoreboard and
Daniel Bruce’s PAT kick gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
The senior running back finished the game with 101 rushing yards in 18
carries. William Officer scored the
other TD for the Mustangs on the way to 162 yards on the ground in 23 attempts.
Bruce was a perfect 4-4 in extra points for the night.
Putting in one of
its best performances of the year, the offensive line not only protected
Lipscomb’s quarterback but provided the openings at the line and blocks
downfield to help the Mustangs record 342 yards of total offense.
John McAlister
led the defense with 10 total tackles including a sack and TFL.
William Stevens added eight tackles with four other Mustangs – Rainey
Lankford, Matthew Quinn, Michael Mascolo and Seth Hubler – each producing seven
total tackles.

TSSAA Playoffs Underway
Last week’s win
against Jackson South Side was the opening of Lipscomb’s 20th overall

– in 1989 and 1992.
Lipscomb has
played in five out of the last seven state championship games bringing home
titles in Class 2A in 2002 and Class 3A in 2007.
The Mustangs finished runner-up in 2003 in Class 2A and as Class 3A
runner-up in 2005 and 2006.

Winning Streak Extended to Six Games
With one of the
youngest teams in over a decade, Lipscomb’s efforts during the first half of the
season to put all of the pieces in place has paid dividends over the last month
and a half. During this time, the
Mustangs have reeled off six consecutive victories outscoring opponents by a
combined margin of 140-52 along the way.
Mustangs by Class
When the season
began, the 2009 Mustangs returned one defensive starter and three offensive
starters (one now playing defense) from last year’s 13-1 state semifinalist
team. Graduating 21 players from
last season, this year’s team consists of 25 seniors, 29 juniors and 28
sophomores.

Turnover Margin Favors Mustangs
Being able to
change the turnover margin at the midway point of the season has been one of the
factors leading to the Mustangs’ success in the second half of the 2009
campaign. Lipscomb holds a +8
advantage in takeaways during the last six games and is +7 overall on the
season.
For 2009,
Lipscomb has turned the football over 14 times (10 fumbles and 4 interceptions)
while recording 21 takeaways (6 fumbles and 15 interceptions).

leads the team with five takeaways including three interceptions and two fumble
recoveries. LLance Runion is right
behind him with four interceptions with Blake Johnson recording three INTs and
one fumble recovery as well. Seth
Hubler has turned in three interceptions including a 50 yard return for a
touchdown against Whites Creek.
Inside the Purple (Red) Zoneo
The Mustangs have
scored on 75.8% of their possessions when inside the red zone this season
putting points on the scoreboard 25 out of 33 times inside the opponent’s 20
yard line. Included in this number
are 24 TDs and one field goal.
Opponents have
scored on 18 out of 26 trips (69.2%) inside the 20 yard line with 15 possessions
ending in touchdowns and three by a field goal.
Lipscomb scored
on all four trips into the red zone last week while Jackson South Side scored on
its only red zone visit.

4th Down Advantage to
Lipscomb
Fourth down
conversions have gone the way of the Mustangs this season especially over the
past several games. Lipscomb was a
perfect 4-4 last week against Jackson South Side in converting fourth down
attempts. For the season, the
Mustangs have converted 17 out of 26 fourth downs (65.4%).
The defense is holding the opposition to only a 28.6% success rate with
6-21 fourth down conversions.
Yellow Laundry
Lipscomb has been
called for 52 penalties this season totaling 390 yards while opponents have
received a combined 70 penalties for 459 yards.
Stevens Tackles by the 100s
With last week’s
eight total tackles against Jackson South Side, senior William Stevens passed
the 100 tackle mark for the 2009 season.
He now has 102 on the year.
For his career, Stevens has 210 total tackles including 21 tackles for a loss
and six sacks.
On the Defense
The Mustang defensive unit
saved its best performance for the first round of the playoffs in holding
Jackson South Side to only 167 yards of total offense.
That is the lowest number of yards yielded by the Mustang defense this
season.
Keeping to the Ground
With 569 offensive plays
in 11 games, Lipscomb has rushed the football 85.1% of the time.
The Mustangs have 484 rushing attempts compared to 85 pass plays.
Coin Toss Advantage
Through the first
11 games, Lipscomb has won the coin toss seven times and four out of five when
the Mustangs make the call. With its
seven selections, Lipscomb has elected to defer to the second half six times and
receive once. On the other hand, the
opposition has elected to receive the football to start the game each of the
four times they have made the selection.
Production Perfection
The Mustangs have
been perfect in red zone production over the last two weeks and in four of the
games during the six game winning streak.
Lipscomb scored on all four trips inside the red zone against Jackson
South Side, on all three trips against East Literature, on the only possession
against Greenbrier and started the streak with a perfect 4-4 in the game with
Whites Creek.
Hold That Line
The offensive
line continues to be one of the strong points for the Mustangs over the last
half of the season in protecting the quarterback as well as leading the rushing
game at the line of scrimmage and downfield.
Not allowing a sack against Jackson South Side, the offensive line has
now kept Clark Malloy sack-free four out of the last five games and six times
this season. Malloy has only been
sacked seven times during the 2009 campaign.
Lipscomb and
It will not be as
widely known as the Music City Miracle that enabled the Tennessee Titans to
defeat the Buffalo Bills a decade ago.
However, last season’s quarterfinal playoff victory for Lipscomb over
Following William
Officer’s touchdown to tie the game at 10 for Lipscomb with 8:06 remaining in
the fourth quarter, Giles County used an 11 play, 70 yard drive to regain the
lead with a mere 1:21 showing on the clock.
However the extra point kick hit the right upright leaving the Bobcats
with only a six point advantage to protect.
Following an incomplete pass on first down, Lipscomb’s offense reached
deep down inside and found enough emotion and will to win to make a drive to the
goal line. T.J. Hoelzer made a
spectacular catch in front of the Mustangs’ bench for a 25 yard gain taking the
purple and gold to just inside Bobcat territory with 1:01 to play.
Caleb Simpson connected with Michael Saggio for a five yard gain and
Officer’s six yard run gave the Mustangs another first down at the Giles County
38 yard line with 46 seconds remaining.
With much
attention being given to Zach Rogers on the drive, other players were stepping
up to make the big plays. But no
plays would be bigger for the Mustangs than the next two made by senior Kyle
Lehning. Sure, he held the state
record for most consecutive PAT kicks at one time and is second in all-time
career PAT kicks made for the TSSAA.
Also, don’t lose sight that he led the team in takeaways on defense in 2008.
On that night, it would be his receiving skills that thrilled Mustang
fans the most.
A 16 yard
reception by Lehning on the next play moved Lipscomb to the 22 yard line.
Simpson then looked in
The Bobcats
opened the scoring with a 22 yard Enrique Villalta field goal in the first
quarter. Lehning answered with a 20
yard field goal for the Mustangs early in the second quarter.
The teams traded turnovers before the Bobcats recaptured the lead on an
eight yard scamper into the end zone by Bo Wallace.
Lipscomb moved inside of the Giles County 10 yard line three times during
the first 36 minutes of the game but was only able to secure three points.
A scoreless third quarter set up the fourth quarter scoring frenzy and
finish.

Lipscomb and
Exchanging game film
might not have even been necessary in preparation for this week’s game as these
two programs have met four times in region play since 2005 as well as in the
TSSAA playoffs in 2006 and 2008.
Lipscomb has managed to win all six meetings with the Bobcats even though three
out of the last four meetings have been decided by seven points or less.
The two games in 2008 won by the Mustangs were by a combined four points.
