Former Region Mates Meet Again

For the third time in the last four post-seasons, and the seventh time overall since 2005, Lipscomb and Giles County will meet on the football field.  The Mustangs lead the overall series 6-0, but it is far from a one-sided affair.  Both games last year were decided by a total of four points.  The regular season game was won by Lipscomb on a Kyle Lehning 27 yard field goal as time expired with the quarterfinal playoff game being won by the Mustangs on a Lehning touchdown pass reception with 28 seconds remaining in the game.

Turning the page into 2009, Lipscomb and Giles County joined separate districts but once again find themselves destined for a playoff match-up.  Two changes though from both the 2008 and 2006 post-season.  This time the game is in the second round of the playoffs and the game is being played in Pulaski.

Lipscomb enters the game on a six-game winning streak while Giles County has won 10 straight games.  The Bobcats have not lost since a Week 0 game at Cookeville (25-24).  The Mustangs are averaging 23.6 points per game while allowing opponents only 15.1 points per outing.  Giles County’s potent offense is averaging 39.5 points per game and have scored 40 or more points in seven games including three games over 50 points.  The Bobcats defense is giving up only 10.2 points per game and have shut-out three opponents this season.

The winner of the game will advance to host the winner of the Page - Lexington contest in the quarterfinals next week.

Last Week’s Game

Behind two 100 yard rushers and a defense that limited Jackson South Side to only 167 total yards for the game, Lipscomb advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs with a solid 28-8 victory.

It took the Mustangs only five plays to score on its first offensive possession moving 62 total yards to take an early lead.  Scott Bledsoe’s first of three touchdowns put Lipscomb on the scoreboard and Daniel Bruce’s PAT kick gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.  The senior running back finished the game with 101 rushing yards in 18 carries.  William Officer scored the other TD for the Mustangs on the way to 162 yards on the ground in 23 attempts.  Bruce was a perfect 4-4 in extra points for the night.

Putting in one of its best performances of the year, the offensive line not only protected Lipscomb’s quarterback but provided the openings at the line and blocks downfield to help the Mustangs record 342 yards of total offense.

John McAlister led the defense with 10 total tackles including a sack and TFL.  William Stevens added eight tackles with four other Mustangs – Rainey Lankford, Matthew Quinn, Michael Mascolo and Seth Hubler – each producing seven total tackles.

Page from the History Books

The 2009 campaign marks the 47th season of football on the Lipscomb campus.  Gridiron play began in 1935 with the Mustangs competing four years through the 1938 season before putting the program on pause for almost three decades.

The football team returned to the field in 1967 and has played 43 consecutive seasons since.

The Mustangs’ contest with Giles County this week will be the 543rd game in Lipscomb football history.  Entering the game with a 360-177-5 all-time record, the storied program has won over 66% of the games played.

All-Time Record Against 2009 Opponents

Lipscomb owns a 55-30 overall record against 2009 opponents winning 64.7% of the games.  Over the years, the Mustangs have played the most games against Goodpasture as the two have met 41 times on the football field with Goodpasture leading the series 21-20.  Removing those contests from the record against 2009 opposition, the Mustangs are 35-9 (79.5%) against the other opponents.

Head Coach Glenn McCadams

Lipscomb’s Glenn McCadams secured his 300th career win as a head coach against East Literature in Week 10 to become the sixth coach to reach the 300 win plateau in his career within the TSSAA.  In his 28th season leading the football program at Lipscomb, McCadams joined the Campus School in 1982 after spending four seasons at the helm of the football team at Trenton Peabody.  McCadams has won over 76% of his games at Lipscomb compiling a 270-83 record.  He holds a career mark of 301-95 in his 32nd season as a head coach.

Under his leadership, the Mustangs have won three state championships  - two in Class 2A (1994 and 2002) and one in Class 3A (2007).  His Lipscomb teams have played in a total of seven state title games as well as five bowl games.  Including the 2008 season, McCadams has taken the program to 17 straight TSSAA Playoffs and 20 overall.  In his 28 seasons, the Mustangs have been to the post-season 25 times.

A native of west Tennessee, the Huntingdon High School graduate spent nine years on the coaching staff at Milan High School before joining the head coaching ranks.  McCadams also serves the Campus School as assistant principal of the high school.  He has also been Athletic Director during his tenure at the Nashville school.

Current Head Coaches with Most Wins

With his 301 career wins, Glenn McCadams is ranked #3 in the state of Tennessee for the most number of wins among active head coaches.  Trailing St. George’s Ken Netherland at the top of the list who has won 350 games, the Lipscomb head coach is just behind Gary Rankin’s (Alcoa - formerly of Riverdale) 304 victories.

McCadams 6th in All-Time TSSAA Wins

Lipscomb head coach Glenn McCadams stands in sixth place on the TSSAA’s list of all-time wins by head coaches in the state of Tennessee with 301.  Below is the TSSAA’s list of the top all-time Tennessee high school head coaches for number of wins:

David Lipscomb Campus School has been recognized by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association for exemplary sportsmanship during the 2008-2009 school year being named as a finalist for the A.F. Bridges Divisional Award and State Award of Excellence.

With these awards, DLCS received special recognition for surpassing expectations to do what’s right either for another school or a representative of the Tennessee Observer’s Program for Sports.  This recognition was granted for displaying an extremely positive atmosphere of citizenship and sportsmanship at athletic events and includes all campus sports teams.

Congratulations to all coaches and players as well as the student body and fans!

Bledsoe and Johnson Named LSN Players of the Game

Scott Bledsoe and Blake Johnson were named Co-Players of the Game for their efforts last week against Jackson South Side.  Both played in multiple phases of the game to help provide the spark needed to propel the Mustangs to the win.

Bledsoe rushed for 101 yards averaging 5.6 yards per carry while scoring three touchdowns for the offense.  He also recorded 31 yards on two kickoff returns for the Mustangs.  Fellow senior Blake Johnson produced four total tackles from his defensive back position and was responsible for two pass deflections as well.  Serving on the punt return team, Johnson added 13 yards on two returns to his totals for the season.

Congratulations to Scott Bledsoe and Blake Johnson . . . the Week 11 LSN Co-Players of the Game.

Mustangs 17th Consecutive TSSAA Playoffs Underway

Last week’s win against Jackson South Side was the opening of Lipscomb’s 20th overall berth and 17th straight trip to the TSSAA playoffs.  The streak dates back to the 1993 campaign.  Since 1988, the Mustangs have missed going to the post-season only twice – in 1989 and 1992.

Lipscomb has played in five out of the last seven state championship games bringing home titles in Class 2A in 2002 and Class 3A in 2007.  The Mustangs finished runner-up in 2003 in Class 2A and as Class 3A runner-up in 2005 and 2006.

Prior to the current TSSAA playoff format, Lipscomb won five Nashville Interscholastic League (NIL) Class A titles and played in eight bowl games.

Seven Straight League Titles

Lipscomb tied Maplewood for the 2009 District 10-AA championship with a 5-1 record.  The title gives the Mustangs at least a share of the league crown for the seventh straight season.  Winning four consecutive Region 5-3A titles from 2005-2008, Lipscomb also won region championships in the program’s final two years of Class 2A in 2003 and 2004.

69th Playoff Game

The second round game with Giles County will be the 69th playoff game in the history of Mustang football.  Lipscomb owns a 52-16 record in the TSSAA playoffs winning over 76% of the games.

Lipscomb has faced 29 different opponents in the playoffs including a new face last week in Jackson South Side.  The Mustangs have met Chattanooga Tyner more than any other team in the state during the playoffs as the two programs have met six times.  This will be the third meeting in the post-season between Lipscomb and Giles County.

Mustangs by Class

When the season began, the 2009 Mustangs returned one defensive starter and three offensive starters (one now playing defense) from last year’s 13-1 state semifinalist team.  Graduating 21 players from last season, this year’s team consists of 25 seniors, 29 juniors and 28 sophomores.

Turnover Margin Favors Mustangs

Being able to change the turnover margin at the midway point of the season has been one of the factors leading to the Mustangs’ success in the second half of the 2009 campaign.  Lipscomb holds a +8 advantage in takeaways during the last six games and is +7 overall on the season.

For 2009, Lipscomb has turned the football over 14 times (10 fumbles and 4 interceptions) while recording 21 takeaways (6 fumbles and 15 interceptions).

William Stevens leads the team with five takeaways including three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.  LLance Runion is right behind him with four interceptions with Blake Johnson recording three INTs and one fumble recovery as well.  Seth Hubler has turned in three interceptions including a 50 yard return for a touchdown against Whites Creek.

Inside the Purple (Red) Zoneo

The Mustangs have scored on 75.8% of their possessions when inside the red zone this season putting points on the scoreboard 25 out of 33 times inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.  Included in this number are 24 TDs and one field goal.

Opponents have scored on 18 out of 26 trips (69.2%) inside the 20 yard line with 15 possessions ending in touchdowns and three by a field goal.

Lipscomb scored on all four trips into the red zone last week while Jackson South Side scored on its only red zone visit.

4th Down Advantage to Lipscomb

Fourth down conversions have gone the way of the Mustangs this season especially over the past several games.  Lipscomb was a perfect 4-4 last week against Jackson South Side in converting fourth down attempts.  For the season, the Mustangs have converted 17 out of 26 fourth downs (65.4%).  The defense is holding the opposition to only a 28.6% success rate with 6-21 fourth down conversions.

Yellow Laundry

Lipscomb has been called for 52 penalties this season totaling 390 yards while opponents have received a combined 70 penalties for 459 yards.

Stevens Tackles by the 100s

With last week’s eight total tackles against Jackson South Side, senior William Stevens passed the 100 tackle mark for the 2009 season.  He now has 102 on the year.  For his career, Stevens has 210 total tackles including 21 tackles for a loss and six sacks.

On the Defense

The Mustang defensive unit saved its best performance for the first round of the playoffs in holding Jackson South Side to only 167 yards of total offense.  That is the lowest number of yards yielded by the Mustang defense this season.

Keeping to the Ground

With 569 offensive plays in 11 games, Lipscomb has rushed the football 85.1% of the time.  The Mustangs have 484 rushing attempts compared to 85 pass plays.

Coin Toss Advantage

Through the first 11 games, Lipscomb has won the coin toss seven times and four out of five when the Mustangs make the call.  With its seven selections, Lipscomb has elected to defer to the second half six times and receive once.  On the other hand, the opposition has elected to receive the football to start the game each of the four times they have made the selection.

Production Perfection

The Mustangs have been perfect in red zone production over the last two weeks and in four of the games during the six game winning streak.  Lipscomb scored on all four trips inside the red zone against Jackson South Side, on all three trips against East Literature, on the only possession against Greenbrier and started the streak with a perfect 4-4 in the game with Whites Creek.

Hold That Line

The offensive line continues to be one of the strong points for the Mustangs over the last half of the season in protecting the quarterback as well as leading the rushing game at the line of scrimmage and downfield.  Not allowing a sack against Jackson South Side, the offensive line has now kept Clark Malloy sack-free four out of the last five games and six times this season.  Malloy has only been sacked seven times during the 2009 campaign.

Lipscomb and Giles County – The Last Time They Met

It will not be as widely known as the Music City Miracle that enabled the Tennessee Titans to defeat the Buffalo Bills a decade ago.  However, last season’s quarterfinal playoff victory for Lipscomb over Giles County just might be called the Magic on Maplehurst or the Luck of Lealand Lane.  Either way, as the final seconds ticked off of the Reese Smith Athletic Complex clock and the Lipscomb students stormed the field, the Mustangs had earned a hard fought 17-16 win.

Following William Officer’s touchdown to tie the game at 10 for Lipscomb with 8:06 remaining in the fourth quarter, Giles County used an 11 play, 70 yard drive to regain the lead with a mere 1:21 showing on the clock.  However the extra point kick hit the right upright leaving the Bobcats with only a six point advantage to protect.  Following an incomplete pass on first down, Lipscomb’s offense reached deep down inside and found enough emotion and will to win to make a drive to the goal line.  T.J. Hoelzer made a spectacular catch in front of the Mustangs’ bench for a 25 yard gain taking the purple and gold to just inside Bobcat territory with 1:01 to play.  Caleb Simpson connected with Michael Saggio for a five yard gain and Officer’s six yard run gave the Mustangs another first down at the Giles County 38 yard line with 46 seconds remaining.

With much attention being given to Zach Rogers on the drive, other players were stepping up to make the big plays.  But no plays would be bigger for the Mustangs than the next two made by senior Kyle Lehning.  Sure, he held the state record for most consecutive PAT kicks at one time and is second in all-time career PAT kicks made for the TSSAA.  Also, don’t lose sight that he led the team in takeaways on defense in 2008.  On that night, it would be his receiving skills that thrilled Mustang fans the most.

A 16 yard reception by Lehning on the next play moved Lipscomb to the 22 yard line.  Simpson then looked in Rogers’ direction just long enough to draw the defense that way on the field and then zipped a pass to an open Lehning who darted into the end zone to tie the game at 16 with 28 seconds remaining.  Lehning’s PAT kick gave him 11 points for the game and raised Lipscomb’s total to 17 providing the Mustangs with the one point lead.  A hail mary pass by the Bobcats was knocked away as the celebration began on Lipscomb’s come from behind win over Giles County.

The Bobcats opened the scoring with a 22 yard Enrique Villalta field goal in the first quarter.  Lehning answered with a 20 yard field goal for the Mustangs early in the second quarter.  The teams traded turnovers before the Bobcats recaptured the lead on an eight yard scamper into the end zone by Bo Wallace.  Lipscomb moved inside of the Giles County 10 yard line three times during the first 36 minutes of the game but was only able to secure three points.  A scoreless third quarter set up the fourth quarter scoring frenzy and finish.

Lipscomb out gained Giles County 304-257 in total yards of offense.  Both teams recorded 14 first downs while the Bobcats led in time of possession 29:37 to 18:23.  Simpson completed 6-10 passes for 125 yards while Officer led the ground attack with 109 yards in 15 rushes.  Lehning had 65 yards in three receptions.  Evan Webb recorded nine tackles for the defense as Ben Brewer and Michael Saggio each added eight.

Lipscomb and Giles County – The Series

Exchanging game film might not have even been necessary in preparation for this week’s game as these two programs have met four times in region play since 2005 as well as in the TSSAA playoffs in 2006 and 2008.  Lipscomb has managed to win all six meetings with the Bobcats even though three out of the last four meetings have been decided by seven points or less.  The two games in 2008 won by the Mustangs were by a combined four points.
