Battle of 2009 Co-Champions Highlights Week Two
Lipscomb travels
across the river this week to face the Maplewood Panthers in an early season
match-up of programs that shared the 2009 District 10-AA title.
It will be the home opener for Maplewood.
The Mustangs
will be looking to put the necessary changes in place to bounce back from a
season opening loss to Page.
Maplewood, on the other hand, is trying to put its explosive offense back on
track as the Panthers shutout Hillsboro to start the season but were blanked by
MBA last week.
Week 2 opens the
District 10-AA 2010 campaign officially with only Pearl-Cohn stepping outside of
district play this week.

Goodpasture Game Changed
The game date
for the Week Five contest with long-time rival Goodpasture has been changed to
Thursday, September 23rd.
This decision was agreed upon by both schools as the game will now be a
part of the Thursday Night Lights High School Football Game of the Week
schedule. Kickoff is still slated
for 7:00 p.m. at Cougar Stadium on the Goodpasture campus.
Through the Years
The Mustangs
have opened the programs 48th season of football on the Lipscomb
campus and are playing in the seventh decade overall in the schools football
history.
Lipscomb
participated in the schools first football game in 1935 with the team competing
four years through the 1938 season.
It would be almost 30 years before the football team returned to the field for
interscholastic competition in 1967.
The 2010 squad is playing in Lipscombs 44th consecutive
season since bringing the program back.
The Mustangs
game with Maplewood will mark the 545th game in Lipscomb football
history. The tradition-rich program
has won over 66% of the games played and enters this weeks match-up with a
360-179-5 all-time record.
Overall Record Against 2010 Opponents
Lipscomb owns a
48-31 overall record against the 2010 opponents.
Goodpasture has appeared on the Mustangs schedule more than any other
team with the Cougars leading the series 21-20.
Looking at the other 9 opponents this season, Lipscomb holds a 28-10
advantage winning 73.7% of the games.
Strength of Schedule
Looking down the
list of 2010 Lipscomb football opponents, it does not take long to see that this
years schedule is filled with many challenges and opportunities.
Seven out of the 10 teams on the schedule are coming off of playoff
seasons last year.
Two District
10-AA opponents made the deepest runs of any opponent in the 2009 playoffs as
Whites Creek lost in the semifinals and Maplewood made it into the
quarterfinals. Goodpasture and Page
both achieved first round wins before bowing out the next week.
Greenbrier, Overton and Pearl-Cohn also participated in the playoffs last
season.

Mustangs by Class
The 2010
Lipscomb football team will bring 75 student athletes out of the locker room
every week as 72 Mustang players will be joined by 3 managers.
Having graduated 25 seniors from last season, this years team consists
of 23 seniors, 22 juniors, 29 sophomores and 1 freshman.
Head Coach Glenn McCadams
In his 29th
season at the helm of the Lipscomb football program, Glenn McCadams has led the
Mustangs from the early days as a Single-A school to the latest move into Class
4A last season. Along the way, he
has continued to lead teams to winning seasons and help develop players into
outstanding young men and community citizens both on and off the field.
McCadams joined
Lipscomb in 1982 following four seasons as head coach at Trenton Peabody.
Prior to that, the west Tennessee native spent nine years as an assistant
coach at Milan High School. That
may have been one of toughest moves of his early career seeing that he is a
graduate of Huntingdon High School.
Tough as it may have been, it was very rewarding and helped to set the tone for
his future as a head coach. He
holds a career mark of 301-97 in 33 seasons as a head coach.
At Lipscomb, McCadams has won over 76% of his games compiling a 270-85
record.
Under his
leadership, the Mustangs have won three state championships
- two in Class 2A (1994 and 2002) and one in Class 3A (2007).
His Lipscomb teams have played in a total of seven state title games as
well as five bowl games. Including
the 2009 season, McCadams has taken the program to 17 consecutive TSSAA Playoffs
and 20 overall. In his 28 seasons,
the Mustangs have been to the post-season 25 times.
His 301 career
wins rank him third in the state of Tennessee for the most number of wins among
active head coaches. He only
trails St. Georges Ken Netherland (352) and Alcoas Gary Rankin (307).
In addition, he stands in sixth place on the TSSAAs list of all-time
wins by a head football coach.
McCadams also
serves the Campus School as assistant principal of the high school.
He has been Athletic Director during his tenure at the Nashville school
as well.
Assistant Coaching Staff
One of the
strengths of the Lipscomb football team has always been leadership.
Head Coach Glenn McCadams has been able to assemble one of the strongest
and longest tenured coaching staffs in middle Tennessee as well as across the
state.

Season Openers
The Week Zero
loss to Page ended a three year win streak for the Mustangs in season openers.
The Mustangs now stand at an all-time record of 28-18-2 in season opening
games.
Last Time Out
Lipscomb opened
the 2010 season on the road at Page in Week Zero as the Mustangs lost a hard
fought 21-7 game in which was still very much undecided until the final 3
minutes of the contest.
After stopping
Pages initial drive to open the game, Lipscomb drove deep into Patriots
territory only to have the possession stall before being able to put points on
the scoreboard. Page took advantage
of the defensive stop and used a potent rushing attack to move downfield.
Markeise Lockridge went the final two yards for the touchdown giving Page
a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Patriots added another TD 4½ minutes into the second quarter and took
a 14-0 lead into the locker
room at halftime.
After a
scoreless third quarter, Lipscomb scored its first points of the new season on a
superb catch and run to the end zone by Hank Hillin.
The senior tight end connected with quarterback Baylor Blickenstaff on a
37 yard pass play that, combined with Daniel Bruces PAT, cut the Page lead in
half. However, following a turnover
swap between the teams, the Patriots put together a five minute drive that
culminated on an eight yard touchdown run by Austin Midge with 2:20 showing on
the clock to clinch the victory for Page.
Dale Babb led
the Mustangs with 104 total yards including 74 rushing yards on 16 carries.
He also had a kickoff return for 21 yards and one reception for nine
yards. Blickenstaff finished the
game completing 7-19 passes for 97 yards.
Cooper Jackson
led the defense with 10 tackles as Ryan Cagle and William Vantrease each added
eight tackles. Michael Mascolo
contributed two fumble recoveries for the defense as well.
7 Straight League Titles in 3 Different Classifications
The Mustangs
have won or shared the regular season league crown for seven consecutive
seasons. Prior to last seasons
shared title with Maplewood in District 10-AA (Class 4A), Lipscomb had won four
straight Region 5-3A titles from 2005-2008.
These followed championships in the programs final two years in Class 2A
in 2003 and 2004.
District 10-AA Very Balanced
After the first
two weeks of the season, District 10-AA seems to be even more balanced in its
second year of existence. Last
year, the newly formed district provided more of a tiered look with clear lines
drawn toward the playoffs.
CPA has defeated
two defending state champions from the state of Kentucky that defeated the Lions
in 2009. Stratford has been able to
break into the win column early on with an 18-12 win over Hunters Lane.
Pearl-Cohn and Maplewood have ventured out of district play and have
faced very strong teams from Division I and Division II across the mid-state.

Fresh Face Leads Defense
One year removed
from playing middle school football on the Lipscomb campus, freshman Cooper
Jackson led the defensive effort from his linebacker position against Page.
Jackson contributed 10 total tackles that included a forced fumble.
Ryan Cagle and William Vantrease provided great assistance each having
eight total tackles including one for a loss by Vantrease.
As a team, the
Mustangs created four turnovers by the Patriots.
Michael Mascolo recovered two fumbles with David Roos and Guy Simmons
each recovering one. Seth Hubler
added a tackle behind the line of scrimmage as well.
Balanced Offensive Attack
Even though the
Mustangs were held to its lowest offensive output since the 2008 season, a very
balanced attack brought forth several bright spots on a season that has only
just begun. Lipscomb produced 178
total yards including 97 through the air and 81 on the ground.
In his first
varsity start at quarterback, Baylor Blickenstaff finished the game 7-19 in
passing with four different Mustangs contributing receptions.
Three players each contributed two catches including Hank Hillin with 43
yards, Benjamin Haynes with 24 yards and another 21 yards by Lance Runion.
Dale Babb had 83
yards on offense that included 74 rushing and nine receiving.
Babbs 16 carries were a team high for the game as he averaged 4.6 yards
per attempt.
Special Teams . . . From New and Old
The Week Zero
special teams units for Lipscomb consisted of a lot of the old as well as a lot
of the new. In short, if the
football touches your foot on special teams, it did so of a returning player to
that position. On the flipside, if
the football is meant to be carried and touches your hands on special teams,
then it was administered by a player new to that position this season for the
Mustang varsity.
Benjamin Haynes
and Daniel Bruce return as punter and kicker respectively for the Mustangs this
year. Haynes was right on his 2009
average yards per punt in the first game this season.
He punted the football four times averaging 31.8 yards.
The senior had one punt travel longer than 40 yards and had another
downed inside the opponents 20 yard line.
Bruce made good on his only PAT against Page.
He has the opportunity to be one of the most successful placekickers in
Lipscomb history as he connected on 23-27 PATs last year as a freshman.
The new faces
appear on both return teams for the Mustangs.
Gabe Glimps averaged 20.5 yards on two returns to lead the kickoff return
team while Michael Mascolo had 19 yards in the only punt return.
Whether it is
the old or new, familiar or not, it seems that Lipscombs 2010 special teams
units are definitely in good hands (or feet).

Lipscomb and Maplewood The Last Time They Met
For three quarters, Lipscomb had the
Maplewood Panthers right where they wanted as the Mustangs controlled many of
the statistical categories and led the game 13-3.
However, a 20 point outburst by the Panthers behind three long runs
proved to be too much for the Mustangs to overcome as Maplewood took the early
season district lead with a 23-13 win.
The Panthers
LeDarius Vanleer finished the game with 228 rushing yards on18 carries churning
out 134 of those yards in the fourth quarter alone.
A 35 yard
touchdown pass from Clark Malloy to Benjamin Haynes opened the scoring for the
Mustangs.
The fourth
quarter proved to be all maroon-colored as
Lipscomb led in
time of possession 29:30 to 18:30 as well as first downs 13-9.

Lipscomb and Maplewood - The Series
Even with
Maplewoods win over Lipscomb in the inaugural varsity game between the two
football programs last season, it was not the first time the schools had met on
the football field. The Panthers
and Mustangs first faced each other in 1967, the first year Lipscomb resumed
football. With the return of the
program still under development, Maplewoods B team provided the opposition
with Lipscomb taking a 13-7 victory.

A Look at the Maplewood Panthers
Maplewood has opened the 2010 season with results of the first two games falling
on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
Forget that one was a win and one was loss.
What sticks out more is the manner in which the games were won and lost.
The Panthers
offense rolled in the season opening win over Hillsboro gaining 301 total yards.
However, in the 17-0 victory, the high-powered offense was only able to
produce one touchdown. It came in
the form of a rushing TD by quarterback Alvin Stokes.
The other touchdown was by the defense on a 64 yard interception return.
The defense also held the Burros to 85 yards of total offense including
only 15 rushing yards in 18 carries.
Last week was a
different story as Maplewood was shutout by MBA 24-0.
The defense allowed the Big Red only 204 total yards of offense while the
Panthers offense was limited to 103 total yards.
Stanley Hagan
leads the Maplewood offense through two games with 231 rushing yards on 28
carries averaging 8.3 yards per attempt.
LeDarius Vanleer is averaging 3.9 yards per carry producing 89 yards.
Stokes has completed 8-14 passes this season for 58 yards.
His go-to-guy has been Navonte Parks who has five catches.
Penalties have
worked against the Panthers in 2010 as they have been flagged 18 times for a
total of 142 yards.
Playing under first year head coach Arcentae Broome, Maplewood is looking to
return to the TSSAA playoffs this year as they were a quarterfinalist in 2009.
Broome replaces Ralph Thompson who had led the Panthers to five playoff
berths in nine seasons. Before
coming to Maplewood, Broomes teams at McGavock compiled a 31-32 record in six
seasons.
