Mustangs Travel to Stratford for Regular Season Finale
Lipscomb travels
to Stratford for a key District 10-AA game that will look to provide answers to
the post-season questions for both teams.
The Mustangs and Spartans both enter the Week Ten game with 4-5 overall
records residing just on the outside of the playoff brackets.
Lipscomb is actually the first team knocking on the door with one week to
go.
Both teams are
looking to end the regular season on a high note.
Lipscomb had its three game winning streak come to an end last week while
Stratford lost its second game in a row.
A win by the Mustangs and a Pearl-Cohn loss would give Lipscomb a third
place finish in the district for the second straight year.
The Spartans are looking for their highest finish in District 10-AA since
realignment in 2009.
Around the
district, Maplewood has completed its regular season and clinched a share of the
District 10-AA title. They will
share it with the winner of this week’s Pearl-Cohn at CPA contest.
If Pearl-Cohn wins, the Firebirds win the championship.
If CPA should win, then Maplewood will get the title nod.
In other action, East Literature travels to Whites Creek.

Last Week’s Game
Lipscomb’s
defense kept the team within striking distance as long as possible.
However, the Lions of Christ Presbyterian Academy scored through the air,
on the ground and on special teams to take a 27-0 victory over the Mustangs.
With the win, CPA kept a top two finish in District 10-AA in reach.
CPA used a
no-huddle offense on its first possession to move downfield behind the rushing
attach of Winston Williams and quarterback Albert Mitchell.
After a delay of game penalty on the Lions moved the football back to the
14 yard line, Lipscomb was able to stand firm and keep the visitors out of the
end zone. CPA settled for a 32 yard
field goal from freshman kicker J.R. Osborn to open the scoring.
The Mustangs
were held to three punts in three possessions in the first half achieving 48
yards of total offense. CPA scored
on its first three possessions adding a one yard touchdown run by Mitchell in
the first quarter and a 25 yard field goal by Osborn with 8:06 remaining in the
first half. The Lions took a 13-0
lead to the locker room at halftime as Osborn’s 52 yard field goal on the last
play of the half fell just short.
Lipscomb’s two
punts in the third quarter were sandwiched around a 70 yard punt return for a
touchdown by CPA sophomore Vic Wharton.
The final three possessions for Lipscomb ended with failed fourth down
conversions as well as a fumble.
The Lions added a four yard pass completion for the final score of the night
with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
CPA out gained
the Mustangs 322-82 in total yards with almost an eight minute advantage in time
possession. Gabe Glimps led the
offense for Lipscomb with 45 rushing yards on 10 carries while Jacob Campbell
added 32 yards on eight attempts.
Luke Runion led
the defense with nine total tackles.
Cooper Jackson, Kenny Drew, William Vantrease and Nathan Dickerson each
added seven. William Burgess
contributed a sack for the Mustangs.
First 2011 Loss at Home Within District
The loss to CPA
was the first district loss within the friendly confines of the Reese Smith
Athletic Complex this season for the Mustangs.
It is only the second loss at home for Lipscomb against District 10-AA
competition since realignment in 2009.
Lipscomb is 7-2
at home against District 10-AA teams.
The only other loss came in the first district game of the 2009 season
against Maplewood.
Scoreless Streak for Defense Reached 13 Quarters
During the three game winning streak, Lipscomb’s defense held opponents out of
the end zone for 13 straight quarters.
During this time the defense allowed only two field goals.
Two opponents scored touchdowns on fumble returns against the Mustang
offense.
The 13 quarter
streak dated back to the fourth quarter of the Goodpasture game in Week Five and
continued through the fourth quarter of the Week Eight game at Pearl-Cohn.
Mustangs by Class
This season, 68
players and 4 managers walk onto the field each week representing the 2011
edition of Lipscomb Mustangs football.

Head Coach Glenn McCadams
The 2011
campaign marks head coach Glenn McCadams’ 30th season at the helm of
the Lipscomb football program and 43rd year of coaching high school
football in the state of Tennessee.
He also serves the Campus School as assistant principal of the high school and
has been Athletic Director during his tenure at the Nashville school as well.
McCadams joined
Lipscomb in 1982 following four seasons as head coach at Trenton Peabody.
Prior to that, the west Tennessee native spent nine years as an assistant
coach at Milan High School. That
may have been one of toughest moves of his early career seeing that he is a
graduate of Huntingdon High School.
Tough as it may have been, it was very rewarding and helped to set the tone for
his future as a head coach. He
holds a career mark of 314-105 in 34 seasons as a head coach.
At Lipscomb, McCadams has won over 75% of his games compiling a 283-93
record.
Under his leadership, the Mustangs have won three state championships - two in
Class 2A (1994 and 2002) and one in Class 3A (2007).
His Lipscomb teams have played in a total of seven state title games as
well as five bowl games.
McCadams has led
the team through numerous classification changes within the TSSAA from a Class A
school in 1982 to the current level of Class 4A.
He has taken the program to 18 consecutive TSSAA Playoffs and 21 overall.
In his first 29 seasons, the Mustangs have been to the post-season 26
times.
His 314 career
wins rank him third in the state of Tennessee for the most number of wins among
active head coaches. He only
trails St. George’s Ken Netherland (367) and Alcoa’s Gary Rankin (326).
In addition, he stands in sixth place on
the TSSAA’s list of all-time wins by a head football coach.
Assistant Coaching Staff
When it comes to
being leaders of men and developing players of high character, the Lipscomb
football staff ranks as one of the finest groups to be assembled at any high
school across the state of Tennessee.
Here is a look

A Walk Through Mustang History
This is the 49th
season of football on the Lipscomb campus and the Mustangs are playing in the
seventh decade in the school’s history.
Lipscomb played its first game in 1935 and competed four years through
the 1938 season. It was almost 30
years before the football team returned to the field for interscholastic
competition in 1967.
This week’s game
with Stratford will be the 566th overall contest in the history of
Mustang football. Lipscomb has won
almost 66% of the games played and currently holds a cumulative record of
373-187-5.

Lipscomb Named Winningest Class 4A
Program Since 2000
Lipscomb has
been tabbed as the winningest program in Class 4A football over the last decade
since the turn of the century. The
ranking is based upon each team’s number of overall wins during the 2000 - 2010
seasons. Here is a look at the top
ten:
1.
David Lipscomb
128-25
2.
Knoxville Fulton
108-37
3.
Crockett County
105-30
4.
Greeneville

5.

6.

Covington
90-46
8.
Mitchell
86-48
9.
Dyersburg
82-45
10. Jackson South Side
79-47
Of this group,
three teams have won 70% or more of games including Knoxville Fulton (74.4%),
Crockett County (77.8%) and Lipscomb (83.7%).
Also, only the Mustangs and White House have advanced to the playoffs
every year since 2000.
Overall Record Against 2011 Opponents
The Mustangs own
a 52-36 combined record against the 2011 opponents heading into this week’s
final regular season game with the Spartans.
Lipscomb has faced two of this year’s opponents more than 10 times.
The meeting with Goodpasture was the 43rd in the storied
history of the two schools and the Week Seven game with Greenbrier was the 17th
time the Mustangs had faced the Bobcats.
Eight of this
year’s opponents were playoff participants in 2010.
Mustangs Most Likely Need Win
to Keep Playoff Streak Alive
Lipscomb stands
just outside the Class 4A playoff standings as the regular season enters the
final week and the Mustangs dropped to #33.
Having participated in 18 consecutive TSSAA playoffs, Lipscomb will most
likely need to win this week’s game at Stratford in order to have an opportunity
to make the 2011 post-season.
The top 32 of
each classification will be eligible for the playoffs according to the criteria
set by the TSSAA. Only the top two
teams in each district are guaranteed a playoff berth.
A change in this year’s system will rank these teams ahead of teams that
enter through an at-large basis so the final seeding of each quadrant will not
be available until after Week 10 games this week.
The Mustangs
fell one spot out of the Top 32 only because Frayser or Kingsbury has the
opportunity to finish second in District 15-AA.
Otherwise, Lipscomb would be the 32nd team.

Class 4A Top Ten Shuffle
As has been the
case for most of the season, the Class 4A top ten football poll continues to be
an exclusive club. Very few
“newcomers” have entered the poll during the season as most of the changes have
come from shuffling among the current teams.
Greeneville and Lexington continue to lead the pack earning all of the
first place votes.
The AP ranks the
Top 10 in each of the classifications for the TSSAA as selected by Tennessee
AP-member
sportswriters and broadcasters. All
Associated Press members in Tennessee are eligible to participate in the high
school football poll. First place
votes are shown in parentheses with total points being based on 10 points for a

Lipscomb and Stratford - The Last Time They Met
A surprise start . . . a quick score . . . and 15 points in the second quarter
all led to a superb beginning. The
Mustangs carried the momentum into the second half on the way to a District
10-AA win over Stratford by the score of 35-12.
After winning
the coin toss, Stratford elected to receive.
However, on the opening kickoff, which was an end-over-end kick into the
middle of the field, the Spartans couldn’t decide who was going to pick up the
bouncing football. So, Lipscomb’s
Guy Simmons made the decision for everyone and fell on the loose football at the
Stratford 31 yard line. Three plays
later, Lance Runion went around the end of the line and 18 yards into the end
zone to give the Mustangs a lead only 1:10 into the game.
Lipscomb would
score on all four trips into the red zone in the first half and four out of five
possessions. The defense held
Stratford to only 55 yards of total offense as the Mustangs took a 22-0 lead
into the locker room at halftime.
Stratford’s
offense would provide a rejuvenated effort in the second half as quarterback
LaQuan Horton moved the team downfield for two scores.
Lipscomb would match the scoring effort by the Spartans and walk away
with the 23 point victory.
The Mustangs
were led on defense by Cooper Jackson and Guy Simmons with 10 and 9 total
tackles respectively. Michael
Mascolo added 7 total tackles. Seth
Hubler and Simmons led the charge into the Spartans’ backfield.
Hubler had four tackles for a loss and Simmons contributed another three.

Stratford enters
the final regular season game of 2011 with an opportunity to secure the programs
first playoff berth since 2006.
This is a year that head coach Jason Smith has been looking toward as he has
more seniors on his roster this season than the past three years combined.
The Spartans got
off to a quick start this year with two big wins over Pope John Paul II and
Whites Creek. However, the team has
posted a 2-5 record since that good beginning.
It has been a season of streaks for the Spartans.
After winning the first two, Stratford lost three in a row before winning
the next two. They enter this
week’s game now on a two game losing streak.
Averaging 17.6
points per game this season, Stratford has allowed opponents 23.4 points per
outing. In District 10-AA games,
the Spartans have averaged 12.2 points per game while allowing district
opponents an average of 25.0 points per game.
