Last Week’s Game

Lipscomb celebrated Senior Night at the Reese Smith Athletic Complex with three touchdowns in the first 5 ½ minutes of the game by the special teams and defensive units.  The quick start provided the spark needed to give the Mustangs a 42-0 victory over Montgomery Central will all of the points coming in the first half of action.  Lipscomb’s offense did not set foot onto the football field until 30 seconds remained in the opening quarter.  The Indians’ offense had already consumed more than 11 minutes in time of possession with their first four drives ending in two turnovers, two punts and 21 points for the Mustangs.

Blake Johnson scored the first points of the night on a 47 yard punt return.  Evan Webb’s 35 yard interception return for a TD and Trey McClain’s fumble recovery in the end zone following a hard hit by Michael Saggio on the Montgomery Central punter gave the Mustangs the three touchdown lead.

When Lipscomb’s offense was finally able to take the field for its first possession of the game, it would be short-lived, but with a sweet ending.  After an 11 yard pass to Kyle Lehning, quarterback Caleb Simpson hit tight end Evan Webb in stride across the middle of the field and Webb churned his way to the end zone for a 67 yard TD on the first play of the second quarter.  Blake Johnson added his second punt return touchdown of the game less than three minutes later on a spectacular 62 yard scamper to push the lead to 35-0.  Rafe Tenpenny and John McAlister had big stops for the Mustang defense during the next Montgomery Central possession giving the football back to the Mustangs at the Lipscomb 34.  Following the first penalty of the game to start the drive, Scott Bledsoe took the handoff and covered the five penalty yards and the rest of the field as well for a 71 yard TD run as Hunter Williams provided the final block to clear the path down the sideline.  Lehning’s sixth PAT kick of the game put what proved to be the final points of the night on the scoreboard giving Lipscomb a 42-0 lead entering halftime.

The Mustang offense ran four plays using 1:44 in time of possession in the first half gaining 149 total yards.  The Indians finished the first 24 minutes with 34 plays and a 22:16 time of possession gaining 88 total yards.

For the game, Lipscomb had only three offensive possessions with four first downs and 15 total plays recording 213 yards of total offense.  Montgomery Central gained 199 yards on 56 offensive plays achieving 15 first downs during the game.  Lipscomb averaged 14.2 yards per play while the Indians averaged only 3.6 yards per down.  Montgomery Central led in time of possession 36:48 to 11:12.  Thirty-seven different Mustangs contributed to the tackling efforts as the Mustang defense combined for three quarterback sacks and an additional eight TFL.

Undefeated Regular Season for the

3rd Time in Program History

Completing the 2008 regular season with a 10-0 record, Lipscomb has matched a mark achieved by only two other teams in the program’s history.  The perfect mark matches the 10 wins recorded during the regular season by the 1994 and the 2003 Mustangs.  Both of those seasons were during the time that Lipscomb was a member of Class 2A.

After running the table during the regular season in 1994, the Mustangs went on to win the first state football championship in school history.  Lipscomb allowed the opposition a total of 79 points that year including only 21 in the five playoff games.  The Mustangs defeated Harriman 42-0 in the title game giving the team a 15-0 record for the 1994 season.  The 2003 Mustangs won 14 straight games before falling in the state championship game to Huntingdon.

Blake Johnson Named LSN Player of the Game

Blake Johnson was named as the Lipscomb Sports Network’s Player of the Game for his efforts on special teams and defense in last week’s victory over Montgomery Central.  Johnson had three punt returns totaling 115 yards and two touchdowns.  He also contributed four total tackles on defense.

From the Mustang History Books

The 2008 season marks the 46th season of football on the David Lipscomb campus.  Taking the field for the first time in 1935, Lipscomb played four years through the 1938 season before discontinuing the program for almost three decades.  The program under the leadership of head coach Jacky Ray Davis returned to the field in 1967.

Ten head coaches have walked the sidelines for Lipscomb in 73 years with current head coach Glenn McCadams leading the team in over 64% of the games.  Buck Dozier was the head coach of the Mustangs from 1969-1976 compiling a 51-32-2 record including five Nashville Interscholastic League Class A Championships and two bowl berths.

The Mustangs have posted a 349-173-5 overall record.  This week’s game is the 528th all-time contest in the school’s tradition rich football history.

     Six Straight Region Championships

The 2008 Region 5-3A championship gave the Mustangs a sixth straight region title.  The championship streak covers participation in both Class 2A and Class 3A.  This year’s region championship represents the fourth straight region title for the Mustangs since joining Class 3A in 2005.  The overall streak began in the program’s last two years in Class 2A with titles in 2003 and 2004.

Nine Undefeated Region Champions

Through the years and region championships earned by the Lipscomb football program, nine seasons have produced undefeated Mustang teams within the region.  Those years are 1994, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Region Home Winning Streak Stands at 24

Last week’s victory over Montgomery Central gave the Mustangs the program’s 24th straight region victory at the Reese Smith Athletic Complex.  The last region loss at home for Lipscomb was in the 2001 season.

Looking at the 21st Century

Since the turn of the calendar into the new millennium, Lipscomb holds a 108-16 overall record and a 53-3 mark in region play.  The Mustangs are 28-6 in the playoffs during this time.

Overall Region Win Streak Now at 44

Lipscomb has defeated 44 straight region opponents during the regular season giving the Mustangs the state’s second longest current winning streak for region games.  The Mustangs streak covers portions of six seasons dating back to 2002 as members of Region 4-2A.  Since joining Region 5-3A in 2005, Lipscomb has defeated all 28 region opponents during the regular season.

Maryville holds the state’s longest region winning streak as the Rebels have won 56 straight region games.

Consecutive Win Streak Reaches 20

Lipscomb tied the second longest overall winning streak in program history last week with the win over Montgomery Central.  The Mustangs have now won 20 straight games in a streak that includes the final 10 games of the 2007 season through the first ten weeks of 2008.

The longest winning streak for Lipscomb football is 24 games which began in Week #1 during the 1994 season and continued through Week #9 in 1995.  The original 20 game winning streak began with the last regular season game in 2002 and ended with a loss in the 2003 state title game.  Each of these streaks was built around a state championship season.

50 Wins as Members of Class 3A

Since making the move to Class 3A at the beginning of the 2005 season, the Mustangs have posted a 50-5 overall record.  Looking deeper inside of that mark, the program has a 4-0 record against teams from Class 4A, 44-3 against Class 3A teams and 2-2 against Class 2A.  The only losses to teams within Class 3A have come at the hands of Livingston Academy and Knoxville Fulton in the 2005 and 2006 state title games respectively as well as Greenbrier to open the 2005 campaign.  During the regular season, the Mustangs are 37-3 since moving up in classifications and 13-2 in the playoffs.

   All-Time Records Against 2008 Opponents

Lipscomb owns a 80-30 overall record against its 2008 opponents winning 73% of the games.  Over the years, the Mustangs have played the most games against Goodpasture as the two have met 40 times on the football field with the series standing at 20 wins for each team.  Removing those contests from the record against 2008 opponents, the Mustangs are 60-10 (85.7%) against the other nine regular season opponents.

Eighth Straight Season with 10 or More Wins

The Mustangs have won 10 or more games in a season for the eighth straight year.  Lipscomb has recorded double-digit win seasons every year since 2001 with five trips to the state title game included during that time.  The streak includes a

10-2 mark in 2001, 13-2 in 2002, 14-1 in 2003, 12-2 in 2004, 13-2 in 2005, 13-2 in 2006, 14-1 in 2007 as well as the 10-0 record this season.

Overall under Glenn McCadams, Lipscomb has enjoyed 10 wins or more in a season 14 times.  Buck Dozier’s 1975 team was the only other team in Lipscomb’s history to reach the 10 win plateau.  That season, the Mustangs went 10-1 claiming the Nashville Interscholastic League’s Class A Championship and a trip to the Bear Booster Bowl.

Mustangs by the Numbers

The 2008 Lipscomb football roster is one of the largest in recent memory.  A total of 79 players and managers are on the team this season including 21 seniors, 27 juniors and 31 sophomores.

Mustangs Begin 16th Straight Playoffs

This week, Lipscomb enters the TSSAA playoffs for the 16th straight season in a streak that dates back to 1993.  The 2008 campaign also marks the 19th year overall that the Mustangs have participated in the playoff system.  Since 1988, Lipscomb has only missed going to the post-season twice - in 1989 and 1992.

Lipscomb has played in five out of the last six state championship games bringing home titles in Class 2A in 2002 and Class 3A in 2007.  The Mustangs finished runner-up in 2003 (2A) and as Class 3A runner-up in 2005 and 2006.  The only time that the team missed a trip to Murfreesboro was in 2004 in the program’s last season in Class 2A.  That year, Alcoa defeated the Mustangs at the RSAC in the semifinals.

Prior to the current TSSAA playoff format, Lipscomb won five Nashville Interscholastic League Class A titles and played in eight bowl games.

Mustangs Take Field for 64th Playoff Game

The first round playoff game with Chester County to open the 2008 playoffs will be the 64th playoff game in the history of Mustang football.  Lipscomb owns a 48-15 record in the TSSAA playoffs winning over 76% of the games.

Lipscomb has faced 38 different opponents in the playoffs including three new faces during the 2007 state title run.  The Mustangs have faced Chattanooga Tyner more than any other team in the state during the playoffs as the two programs have met six times.
