The 2006 Season. An Early Look |
|||||||
| The 2005
Season is now in the books. There is no question on how special that
season turned out. We will miss those graduating Seniors and their contributions to that success. Now to spurn on some winter conversation, we will take a quick look at the 2006 Team and what can we expect. On paper, if the Mustang coaching staff can fill a couple of important positions, the team should be a pretty good team. We repeat....on paper only! The staff and the team will determine how successful they can be on the field. Be mindful that players can work to improve themselves in the off season especially in the weight room and during spring practice. The fact that certain players may be mentioned in this report or perhaps are not referenced here does not mean that changes will be or not be made before the season opener. It is usually left up to the individual player and their desire based on their God given talent. |

The Mustangs return 3 internal offensive lineman. Jonathan Lucas, Rick Forehand and Jay Dorris. Graduating were center Grant Pollock and John Austin Wilkerson. Lucas and Dorris are set to return to their respective tackle positions. However, Rick Forehand may get a look at the tight end position. Ben Lehning who ended the season at TE may be switched over to wingback. At Center possibilities could be Seniors Tyne Brewer and Michael Dance. Under Classmen who could fit into the center mix would be Sophomore Dallon Hudson and Juniors Brandon Cannon and Cameron Hunt. At guard, Seniors Benjamin Seamon and Will King will get a look. Dale Binkley will probably be noted in the guard depth chart. Junior Zach Lehmer should also get a look. What could really impact the line is if Rick Forehand does move to TE, then there may be a reshuffle of all the names mentioned. Speculation that Lehning may move to wingback or the TE position may be played by committee with Seniors Lehning, Forehand and Hudson and along with Sophomore Evan Webb. |

| Only one returning official starter
returns into the skill position area, Senior Matt Elrod. However,
Junior Jeremy Holt showed great promise as the half back before an injury ended his season during the playoffs, Junior Kevin Davis started the Championship Game. The Split end position will have a number of players vying for that spot. The List includes Seniors: Conner Prady, Graham Johnson, Thomas Scott, Brian Solomon and under classmen Rogers and Tomlin. Prady and Scott has extensive Varsity experience and Johnson and Solomon earn a look for their accomplishments from JV. Wingback list includes Seniors Ben Lehning, Stephen Dotson, and Charles Stevens, and Junior Kevin Murphy. The Quarterback Position will be a important spot to fill hopefully during spring practice, if not early in Camp David due to conflicts with The Baseball season. Seniors Brad Hunt and Daniel Lyons are expected to be the early front runners. Junior Reid Hillin and Sophomores Ben Brewer and Caleb Simpson will also be looking to get their reps in. One of these three underclassmen will probably be moving to another position. Brewer is the most likely one to be moving to a defensive back position. HB and TB's: Coach Mac and the staff believe there is some depth here. Due to this depth, they are considering letting Matt return to play some defense next year. Jeremy Holt and Kevin Davis come in with varsity experience. Seniors Spencer and Stephen Kinkade also fit into that depth mix along with a number of under-classmen who could get a number of reps in Spring and Camp David. Senior Stephen Dotson could be splitting some time at both wing and HB. |

||||
| The Punting Game
should be in very good hands as both Ben Lehning and Mitchell Tenpenny
handled the duty during the 2005 Season. As for the Long Snapper, the staff indicated that position is wide open. Dale Binkley was the back up snapper to Braden Binkley for the last two seasons. Senior Spencer Kinkade and Sophomore Ryan Nowers will probably be in the mix. Kickoff and place kicking duties are expected to be handled by either Senior Daniel Lyons or sophomore Kyle Lehning. Place Kicking Snapper will likely be Junior Brandon Cannon and Senior Holder Stephen Kinkade, both handled those duties during the 2005 Season. Joining in on additional specials more than likely will be Seniors Aaron Scherer and Houston Bush who will probably handle kickoff coverage. As for the rest of the Chuckwagon Gang (PAT and field goal team) those members probably will not be chosen or even considered until toward the end of Camp David. Normally these are the biggest players on the team. |

||||
| The defensive line is
almost already in-tact. The big question will be who will step up and
pick up the left DE. Junior Zach Lehmer is definitely in the mix. There is some talk that Mitchell Tenpenny may move to the Middle Linebacking position. If that's the case, that would open up the nose position. |
|||||||

![]() Dale Binkley-OLB |
|||||
| The Linebacker Corp returns
two starters, Ben Lehning and Dale Binkley. The staff will be looking
to to find someone to play the Mike position. The options are to either move Lehning or Binkley into that position. If that's the case, look for either Charles Stevens or Stephen Dotson to fill that hole vacated. Binkley and Lehning both had a extremely good season in their outside positions and the first look will be to actually fill Mike with someone different. Candidates include Juniors Mitchell Tenpenny or Zach Lehmer. Other names mentioned will be Stephens, Dotson and Sophomore Evan Webb. The Kinkades and Michael Dance will likely fill depth positions at Linebacker. |

Corner | ||||||
| Strong Safety | Free Safety | ||||||
| The Secondary returns only 1
starter, Senior Burton Wood. Matt Elrod has been projected early as
playing strong safety. Leaving the other safety position and a corner as up for grabs. Those vying for those spots would include Seniors, Daniel Lyons, Conner Prady, Graham Johnson, Thomas Scott, Bryan Solomon, and Junior Russ Moneypenny. Sophomore Ben Brewer could also be in the hunt. |
|||||||
| The Variables | |||||||
| The 2005 Freshman Team ended up 7-1
on the season. There are several players who will be Sophomores who
might be able to step up and make some varsity contributions. They would include: Zach Rogers, Caleb Simpson, Evan Webb, Dallon Hudson, Hunt, Quinn, and Tomberlin. The Coaches were looking for the following to improve their status with work in the weight room: Travis Harper as LB and TE. Rob Kurtz as WB and CB. Buck Sheesley as DB, Clayton Stroop as LB and G., Geoffrey Street, SE and DB. Jonathan Clinger as G and LB Cameron Hunt will see time on at least Chuck Wagon and OL. Logan Felts as STD. Taylor Fox as DE. Nathan Moorer as G and LB. Ryan Wilson as WB. Several of these players noted with hard work could put themselves into position of seeing not only extensive JV action but valued varsity contributors. There are some incoming sophomores who are not mentioned here who could also be contributors. But comment on these potential players will come with our next team update following the Spring practice and winter workouts. |

| A Early Look at Region 5. | |||||||
| Page | Under achieved this past year.
Favorite to win the 2005 Region. Tremendous offensive team but fell
short defensively. Should be improved. |
||||||
| Marshall County | Had new staff last year. The
Head Coach will be able to make some of his own hires on the staff for the
coming year. Dangerous offensive unit. Dont a Hightower will be a force in the backfield. Defense has to improve. The Head Coach can concentrate on football only. Should be improved. |
||||||
| Mont. Central | Got off to a good start in 2005 but the injury bug hit them hard. Need some depth. Status Quo or unknown improvement. | ||||||
| Spring Hill | Lost their Head Coach to Armed
Services in 2005. Not sure of his return date. Disappointing
season in 2005 despite playing hard every game and not giving up. If Coach returns, should definitely help and improve this team. |
||||||
| Creek Wood | Very good 2005 Season. They grow them big in Dickson County. Should be status quo if not somewhat improved. | ||||||
| Giles County | Slow start in 2005 but improved
greatly under first year coach. They should be a very entertaining
team to watch on the field. Should be improved and making noise to get to the playoffs. Greatly Improved |
||||||
| Cheatham County | Exceptional 2005 team. Well
Coached. Loss some very good players to graduation, Clint Casteel.
The staff will have them competing for another playoff spot. Status Quo. |
||||||
| The 2006 Season should see 6 of
these teams vying for playoff spots. Potentially coming down to week
10 again for that final 4th seeding. The Mustangs went 7-0 in the Region in 2005. However, that will be a tall order for them to repeat the feat in 2006. |
